Colleges with GED Programs in New York (NY)

For students in New York who are looking to earn their GED certificate, the state has several really good resources designed to help prospective test takers. The New York State GED Testing Office has a list of both preparation programs and testing centers by county. In addition, the City University of New York, through its Adult Literacy program, has GED prep classes at 13 of its 14 campuses (only Hunter College does not offer GED classes). Depending on the college, some classes are free while others charge tuition for a set number of classes. For schools that offer both types of programs, the free classes often have a waitlist.

For students who are interested in pursuing a college degree while earning their GED, some colleges offer a 24 credit hour GED program where students can earn a high school equivalency diploma while taking college classes. For more information about these programs, click here.

Colleges in New York with 24 Credit Hour GED Programs

For students who know they want to pursue a college degree, the State of New York also has a program where students can earn their GED by completing a set number of college credits. Students who earn 24 credits can apply for a high school equivalency diploma. The 24 credits must follow a set curriculum including:

  • 6 credits in English (examples: Writing, Literature, Speech…)
  • 3 credits in Math
  • 3 credits in Natural Science (examples: Biology, Chemistry, Physics…)
  • 3 credits in Social Science (examples: History, Geography, Economics…)
  • 3 credits in Humanities (examples: Philosophy, Art, Drama…)
  • 6 credits in degree program requirements
(Disclaimer: Classes are used for example purposes only. Colleges often have set courses that fall into the specific categories, so check with a school counselor to determine if prospective courses will meet the 24 credit requirement.)

If interested in one of these programs, students should contact their prospective school(s) to ask about admissions requirements. These programs usually have age restrictions and require students to take an entry exam to ensure that they qualify under the Ability to Benefit guidelines. In addition, financial aid is not guaranteed for these types of programs, so be sure to discuss tuition expenses with an admissions counselor before enrolling. Once admitted, students must maintain a minimum GPA in order to be eligible to earn their GED certificate. After completing the 24 college credits, students may submit their GED application to the New York State GED Testing Office.
